Making a budget

March 19th, 2006 at 10:13 pm

DH has been going over our bills and expenses and we're in the process of making a budget. This is MAJOR for him to take an initiative and sit down to do this with me. Hopefully I'll be able to say that we've come up with a plan within the next week or so to save more money, and also reduce debt.

I've listed a couple of items on E-Bay, and plan to do a few more tonight.

Once you learn to stick with a budget, I predict you will love it. I have been on one for many years. Every year or so, I have to adjust it a little bit. Just make sure to make saving the first item on your ajenda. Aim for 10% but start with something. good luck!

another suggestion is to add in some "fun' money or rewards-not anything too extravagant but something so you have something to look forward to once you have reached some goals. also, start writing down everything you spend your money on because it all adds up and you will see very quickly where your money has gone. How we started was going over all over our bank statements and credit card bills for one year and we created an excel spreadsheet and listed all of the categories that we spent money on. Our biggest expense outside of mortgage was our food bill-we had to cut back on takeout and eating out and groceries was out of control too.

Also, see if you can shop around for less expensive car insurance, cable, cell phone etc. Also would highly reoommend www.stretcher.com and www.betterbudgeting.com for ideas on saving and budgeting and also www.frugalvillage.com.

It is great to see that your DH is on board-you will work it out. Good luck!
