A dose of reality

April 13th, 2006 at 07:33 am

At work I've met all sorts of people, of all ages. It's mostly women, and their financial situations vary greatly. Some are the main breadwinners. Some just supplement their husbands' incomes. It can be very sobering to see what some of the 50-something women are up against.

One person I like a lot is in her 50's, with no health insurance. Low income, not married. What will happen to her?

My husband lost his job a couple of years ago and the one he found to replace it doesn't pay nearly as well. We still do ok, but it's definitely more challenging now. We do have health insurance and are both able to work.

Another woman I know is raising four kids on her own - her husband died last year. She is moving south soon to try & make a fresh start. I admire her courage.

I'm looking forward to warmer weather. The gas bill is already going down quite a bit, thank goodness. The kids are older now. It's hard to believe that in 7 years they will both be adults. Time sure does fly.

I need to save for the future now. It's no joke, or too far away to think about. {Shudder}
