Aunt Delores has died

April 22nd, 2006 at 05:57 pm

DH's aunt has been ill the past few months. She is quite overweight and is diabetic. Her kidneys started to fail a few weeks ago and she was hospitalized. Bedridden, her bed sores were bad. Anyhow this morning her body just shut down and they had to let her go. I know her pain was assisted by morphine. We pray for her and her children. They live about 45 minutes away. I had to call in to work. I hate to leave them in the lurch, but family is important. DH is working in the front yard but later we will go and visit.

Our dachshund dog has gone down twice within the last 8 months with back problems. Both times she has been paralyzed. We gave her steriods, muscle relaxers, and vitamin C in mega doses. We put her on complete bed rest (our bed LOL), massaged her, put her in the warm bathwater; everything. We love her.

Her sister died a year ago from the same thing. That dog was my precious one and I still grieve for her. Anyhow, Shadow has been in pain since last Sunday off and on. Last night it got really bad and I took her to the vet. It cost $168 dollars. Ouch! She has two prescriptions and they gave her a shot and a morphine patch. Last night she slept with us, something that is unusual. The girls have their own beds down here! We wanted to watch her and fuss over her. She was positively daffy from the drugs. At least this time she isn't paralyzed.

Today I will straighten up a little bit and then we will go and visit family. The vet was expensive and now I'll miss a day's pay, but family is more important.

    Family is important..and they will appreciate your being there. Death is never easy.

    Your poor pup...I know that breed is prone to back problems...thank goodness you lil one is in a loving enviornment when she is in pain. It is hard to see them suffer, they can't talk...but they can sure let us know, huh?

    She tells us all about it. Last night she way crying in pain. After we came back from the vet's she lay in our bed and told DH and I all about it. Here's what Shadow said;

    "Mom took me to the vet and I was so scared! Then, do you know what they DID to me? They used that buzzy razor that I'm terrified of and SHAVED MY FUR in one spot to put that patch on me!"

    "Guys, it got even worse. After I got my shot mom asked them to trim my nails. OH, the humanity of it all! I tried to growl and cry the way I usually do, but I was drugged. All I could manage to do was drool a little."

    "I had to ride in the CAR. I was so afraid. I was stuck in that darn kennel and couldn't even stick my head out the window to sniff, or shed all over mom the way I usually do when I'm anxious in the car."

    "Now that I'm home and safe in your bed, I need to cry a little and vent. Please give me the pity and belly scritches I so richly deserve {sigh}."

    DH and I both loved on her and she stopped talking after a while and fell asleep.

    We have a little beagle that is built like a dachshund. She too has knee/back problems. We feed her the adult diet with glucosymine. It has helped. She is only six! They want to replace her knees. Hubby says no way $1000 apiece! But I am with you, she is our baby. She is doing better and seems to know when to slow down, we only get in trouble when the girls do too much with her. Gosh, when they wake you up in the middle of the night crying, it is soooo terrible! They can't talk. We use the junior strength ibprofin for her and it helps a lot. We even pulled her off the arthritis meds (for now!) I think we spent over $400 last year for visits test and med. Keep plugging! Tell her Bebe is thinking of her!
